Project start

The BigAir (PTDC/EAM-AMB/2606/2020) started on 29 March 2021 and its main objective is to improve the performance of the air quality modelling applications in Portugal using big data sets (available at no cost) to calculate the historical and forecast Portuguese atmospheric emissions with high spatial (exact location of emission sources) and temporal (hourly values) resolutions. The first worldwide open and collaborative emission inventory database will be developed to the stakeholders identify inadequate atmospheric emission values and lack of emission sources. This database will also allow information sharing between the scientific community (international and national) and provide a continuous improvement of the Portuguese emission inventory.

The BigAir is coordinated by Diogo Lopes and is financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology for 36 months (between March 2021 and March 2024) with a total budget of about 250 000 €. The consortium of the BigAir is composed of a multi-disciplinary team composed of researchers and PhD students from GEMAC (Group on Emissions, Modelling and Climate Change) and LAC (Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory) research groups of the University of Aveiro (Aveiro, Portugal).

To disseminate and promote the knowledge developed in the project, the BigAir is also presented on the following web pages: i) CESAM; ii) GEMAC; and iii) ResearchGate.
